St. Joseph's College was founded at Nagapattinam in 1844. It got affiliated to the University of Madras in 1866 and got subsequently transferred to Tiruchirapalli in 1883. It celebrated it's Centenary in 1945. In 1978, Autonomy was conferred to the college and it earned affiliation to Bharathidasan University 4 years afterwards. The Sacred Heart hostel provides 2 Messes and 2 Dining halls with a modern kitchen facility. The college features a good museum established in 1881.
